Mac OS X Yosemite: Installation & Tips

Before your now full of anticipation throw everything overboard and want to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.10.0 "Yosemite", come from us some words of reason, which have proved effective. There are installation instructions and tips about upgrading to Mac OS X Yosemite.
It's not always good to be the first.

We know the voltage is large. Most Mac users (or Hackintosh owners) want to bring as soon as possible their devices up to date. As it is with software so it may not be smart to jump directly to the early adopter boat.

Even after the public beta test are some bugs and compatibility issues never be ruled out, so I would wait for about vital systems yet

Note:To ensure you a smooth and comfortable Mac Yosemite experience, you can check the detailed info on Mac OS X Yosemite.

Important Reminder: Backup

A bootable backup of the system partition can be created with the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner. You need do nothing to a separate partition on an internal drive, it is necessary, of course, on an external drive. A 1: 1 image of your main partition would be created so that, alternatively you can delete the destination partition is either empty or copy on intelligent basis, the difference can be (continuous backups).

This can be booted by holding the Option key. I prefer this form of backup, because then I assume all changes to the system and receive a mere backup the files in / Library / Preferences / Application Support folder any drivers homebrew and other small details will never forget. It is also nice to be able to boot a backup immediately and be ready to work directly in an emergency.

With an SSD as the main disk of the process is in both directions also quite painless and quick, so I just multiple backups (fresh install profiled, minimal configuration, continuous work environment) have preserved. It ranges in doubt, of course, only a current backup before Yosemite installation process.
Reinstall or upgrade?

Here are the ghosts. In principle, it does not hurt my opinion, but a bit more time to invest in setting up a new system. So I am a proponent of the new installation.

The advantages are in a potentially more stable, guaranteed meaner and generally neater system, because several old plists and possibly long forgotten kexts then anyway walk overboard. Many unnecessary kernel panics you can save with a relatively brisk trick:

Clean reinstall of Yosemite via USB stick

Connect USB stick with at least 8 GB capacity with the Mac
Open the Disk Utility (Disk Utility)
The USB stick format (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, if not already so)
Open Terminal and type the following command to create an install media use, enter your admin password when calling:

Note: For "Untitled" in this command sets your logically the name of your USB stick.

The utility for creating installation media is now grab the USB stick and make in 10-30 minutes a Yosemite-USB-Installer from it. This can then be used quite regularly for a new installation as a disc. Please do not interfere during the procedure and can make the Mac do its thing, after spitting the terminal a message รก la "copy complete" or "Copy Complete" and "Done" from. Then you can restart your Mac.

With USB-Stick connected so we restart your Mac, hold down the Alt / Option key to get into the boot menu and select as our Yosemite installation media with an orange icon from.

The installer loads, we come to the selection and click on anything yet. Now it's just about time to open the Disk Utility (Disk Utility) from the menu above. From there you select the primary system partition of your Macs. This should also reformat before installing Mac OS Extended (journaled), as before the USB stick (of course first create the backup, as described at the top). The name can be set by yourself.

When it's done, you can close the window and just follow the installation instructions in the Yosemite installer. That's it, done! Enjoy the fresh, brisk and brand new system!

Yosemite installation as an upgrade

If you all too complicated, lengthy or technically appears: You can also simply open the Mac App Store and download Yosemite from there and install it as an upgrade.

This requires less effort, but a backup of at least the recommended important private files. With this method, it is said that you may be a few small defects and / or performance penalty must accept on the basis of any contaminated sites.
