iPhone calls and SMS on Mac - how it works

Cool thing: SMS messages, we can write, calls on the computer in reception on Mac - iOS and OS X Yosemite 8 make it possible. We declare the means, the phone calls and text messaging on the Mac.

We know already from iMessage: The messages that we receive as iMessage, we can read on other devices - provided that they are linked with our Apple ID and if we want to. This works with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac.

We receive this opportunity now for the messages that go over the air - as SMS. And even with calls it works. We can even handed back during telephone calls from Mac to iPhone. First, we explain the device, then follow:

Requirements for SMS and calls on the Mac

The passing of calls and SMS messages is a part of continuity ("integration") in OS X and iOS Yosemite 8 The hardware requirements are according to Apple:
iPhone 5 or later,
iPad 4th generation or later,
iPad mini or later,
iPod touch 5th generation or later.
For Macs, there is no detailed information. It's also possible that a newer Mac with Bluetooth 4.0 module is not absolutely necessary (like to share experiences in the comments).

The equipment requires the latest versions of operating systems (iOS 8.1). On the Mac, we see in the Mac App Store updates, if an update is pending. The iPhone shows it in the Settings -> General -> Software Update.

iPhone and Mac must be logged in the same WLAN. And indeed: Was the Mac only connected by cable to our corporate network, the telephone transfer did not work.

FaceTime we must connect with our Apple ID. See iPhone Settings -> FaceTime and on the Mac FaceTime -> Settings.

Setting up iPhone & Mac for SMS

The device for SMS and calls on the Mac runs almost automatically. If the conditions listed above given (iPhone on the same network ?!), we need to open on the Mac only news app. After a short time the following message appears: The program "News" can send and receive your iPhone SMS messages on this Mac.

A click on Enable starts the shortcut: To securely connect iPhone and Mac for the text messages, the Mac shows us a number combination. A short time later appear on the iPhone an input field where we enter this code.

Now we can write a text message and send it on the Mac - the iPhone has in the background the access to the wireless network.
