iOS 9 Pros & Cons: Should You Update to iOS 9 or Stick with iOS 8


As expected, Apple has unveiled iOS at its annual developer conference WWDC. The new version of the mobile operating system is focused primarily on improving battery life and smart assistant Siri. If you have not decided whether you should update your iPhone, iPad to iOS 9, read this article to make a decision.



Part 1. Should You Update to iOS 9: Pros

Proactive voice assistant

Apple expands iOS nine with the functionality of its smart voice assistant Siri and Spotlight search considerably. These are so proactive, similar to Google Knows card program. This was partly done through a summary page where app suggesties and the most important news is visible.

Spotlight can search third-party apps and users directly here to send when they tap a link. Furthermore, Siri has to respond smarter to natural sentences in which reference words are used.

Because of this it is enough to ask Siri to make a memory of "this" as for example open a web page. The wizard leads itself off it to the information that is contained in that page. Siri in iOS 9 gives further suggestions for apps and can also automatically agreements that arrive via e-mail into Apple's own balding Rapp.

Multitasking on iPad

As expected, iOS 9 brings improved multitasking on iPad. Users could already easily switch between running apps, but in the new version they can operate simultaneously in two apps.

This can swipe left another app at the right of the screen, e.g. the Messages to respond quickly to a text message. Through the right is also a list of other running app to call. For video use is made of so-called picture-in-picture. The movie being played will then be placed in a small corner of the screen and continue playing.

This functionality works on newer iPads, from the iPad Air and iPad Mini 2. The iPad Air 2 also offers the ability to keep the apps actually both active, the screen as it were, is split into two. Both apps offer using the same touch functionality.

iOS 9 also provides additional key features for the iPad. Pressing two fingers on the screen, a kind trackpad functionality of laptops is imitated. This should make it easier to copy and paste entire chunks of text, such as e-mails.

Better performance

Apple stressed that iOS nine runs more efficiently than predecessor iOS 8. That should translate them in active use an iPhone in an extra hour battery life. In addition, the new version also introduces a special power saving, using some features are turned off to save the battery. This would again have to provide three hours of additional battery life.

In line with earlier rumours Apple is iOS nine also in efficiency in terms of storage space. iOS nine takes significantly less space than iOS 8. The file size of the update is of 4.6 gigabytes reduced to 1.3 GB. 

iOS namely 9 is also available for older iOS devices. The operating system requirements are unchanged, so even iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users can download the update when it is released.

Apple Music

After persistent rumours after the presentation of iOS nine still time reserved for Apple's answer to streaming services like Spotify Apple Music. The app combines streaming music with a social network called Apple Music Connect and a live radio station.

Music artists get their own page, where they are able to provide updates on the status of their new album. Users can then respond to the page, similar to how it works, for example, Facebook.

In addition, the app recommends certain music on the basis of suggestions from artists. Apple promises that this functionality does not only consist of an algorithm. Apple Music also offers a kind of Internet radio, Beats 1. The live radio is continuously managed by real people. Beats via one 24-hour a day radio from three different studios in New York, Los Angeles and London.

Apple Music as expected costs $ 9.99 a month, but the first three months free. The service will be launched June 30.

Renewed apps

Apple Updates iOS ninth with a number of its own apps, including Maps and apple pay. Maps will have a separate display of public transport routes which can be scheduled through multiple means of transportation. Also, a survey of eating and shopping opportunities near the location where users are located.

With iOS 9 also introduced a new app, Apple News. The app is best to compare with the app Flipboard, which transforms an RSS feed of various newspapers and websites to a kind of digital magazine.

Apple also announced that the payment service apple pay from July is also available in the UK. Also, the Passbook app, which various maps and tickets can be saved, renamed Wallet.

Finally, it should switch from Android to iOS easier through nine, thanks to a separate app called Move to iOS. Allows wireless contacts, messages, photos, mail settings, and even apps on Google's operating system will be transferred to it from Apple.


Part 2. Should You Update to iOS 9: Cons

Slow Speed on Old iDevice: Based on the update experience of iOS 8, iOS 9 can be very slow on your old iPhone 4s or iPad 2. If you are working on an old iPhone or iPad, you may not want to take a risk.

No Major Changes in Visual Design: If you are expecting to get a span-new visual enjoyment on iOS 9, you might be disappointed because iOS 9 looks very much like iOS 8 on the whole.

Downgrading Isn't Fun: You should bear in mind that it's always not an easy task to downgrade to the previous version after updating to iOS 9.

Lose Your iOS 8 Jailbreak: If you have jailbroken your iPhone, once you installed the latest iOS 9, you are going to lose your iOS 8 jailbreak.

Conclusion:

iOS 9 will be officially released in September, when Apple presents its new iPhones. It is worth to have a try on the new update, but for old iDevices owner, it’s all up to you.
